THE LOCATION:Private Residence, Centerville, VA (1998)
THE PROJECT:The client wanted to decorate an area of her family room
that really stumped her. This area was a triangular area just below her cathedral
ceiling and led into her kitchen ceiling. To her it was a big white disturbing
triangle. The other part of the project that made things interesting was the
part were the client wanted to be able to take the decorative
painting with her when she moved. She and her husband were professional
military and moved often. This was quite obvious just by looking around.
They had collections from all over the world. Before I began my design project,
I felt obligated to provide something that would speak of her current location,
the Nation's Capital.
THE SOLUTION:I painted a natural fit for the triangular
shaped space, a pediment. I used the architectural references from several
books on Washington, DC, my personal memories of train stations up the
Eastern Corridor and listened to Simple Truth by David Baldacci
(a book on tape with vivid descriptions of the Supreme Court building)
while painting the pediment. The development of my portable mural
began with this project. I painted the mural on canvas and applied
it to the wall in a way that the client can take it with her when she is
relocated. I feel as if I have represented her current location with this project.
