THE LOCATION:Private residence, Fairfax, Virginia (2000)
THE PROJECT:After completing faux finishing and
trompe l'Oeil work in the kitchen the clients felt very at
ease with contracting me to complete a mural that would be
very special for them. This mural was on a large wall in the
living room and was to combine scenes from all of their travels.
When I first saw the wall, my eye traveled to the very tip of the
room and stayed there. It was and effect of the architecture and
disturbed the flow of the eye. My purpose was to change the focus
in the room from the very top of the room to settle somewhere in around eye level.
THE SOLUTION:I transformed the area by painting a
window with a drapery treatment at the top of the window. A
fictional landscape made up of all the locations from around
the world allows the viewer to escape into the richness and
beauty of abundant travels. I felt a bit strange placing the
Sydney, Australia, Opera House next to the San Francisco,
California, Golden Gate Bridge, but it worked with my
composition. It's a show place with a restful place for the eye.
